An evening dress has one job before it has any others: it has to stay where it was put. We start with the shoulder, because a sleeve that pulls forward will drag the neckline with it by the end of the night. Lace is stitched flat rather than gathered, velvet is checked for crush marks after an hour in a bag, and every back zip is opened and closed against the fabric it sits in. The sample is worn seated, standing and walking up stairs before it is photographed. If a seam catches or a hem lifts, it goes back to the pattern table rather than onto the rail.
The test we run
Every sample spends a full evening on a body before it is photographed. If it needs a hand to hold it in place, it is not ready.
A lace cuff, a draped cape back and a longer line, all cut to stay in place after the table is cleared.

The dress that carries the night, and the top that keeps a jacket optional.

Three surfaces carry this collection: a lace sleeve that reads as shadow, a velvet that changes with the light, and a plain cuff that keeps the volume in check. We photograph each one in daylight and under warm light, because a colour that looks rich on a screen can turn flat in a restaurant.
Seated, standing and walking up stairs before a single photograph is taken.
Folded along the seams so a sleeve arrives as it left the table.
Unworn with tags attached, by post or in person at our Virginia address.
